The Société Francophone de Cape Cod was founded in April 2007 by the late Pauline Nelson, Ph.D., Professor Emerita of Foreign Languages at Bethany College in West Virginia. Pauline had a deep appreciation for French language and culture and wanted to share that passion with others on Cape Cod.
Today, we are a friendly social group for adults who enjoy speaking French, meeting new people, and celebrating French and Francophone culture. From September through June, we meet at restaurants and other locations around Cape Cod for coffee, drinks, lunch, or dinner.
Some events are casual meetups, while others are sit-down dinners or celebrations inspired by French holidays and traditions, including Bastille Day and Dîner en Blanc. There are no classes or formal programs—just interesting conversation and a chance to keep your French alive.
French is spoken throughout our events, so participants should be comfortable taking part in a basic conversation. You do not need to be fluent. We welcome different conversational levels and do our best to help everyone feel included.
Attending an Event
Advance registration is required so we can make appropriate arrangements with each venue. There is no charge for the event and everyone pays for their own food and beverages. Whenever possible, restaurants provide individual checks. If separate checks are not available, we may ask participants to pay in cash.
Becoming a Member
The Société is managed by a volunteer team that maintains the website, selects event locations, and sends announcements about upcoming events. We have no officers; we work together as equal partners to keep French alive on Cape Cod.
After attending a few events, participants are encouraged to become members. Annual membership is $25 and includes our email announcements and event invitations. Membership fees help cover the cost of maintaining our website and occasionally providing special French treats at our events.
